Kirkby Malhamdale

KIRKBY in MALHAM-DALE, a parish comprising the township of Calton in the eastern division, and the townships of Airton, Hanlith, Kirkby in Malhamdale, Malham, Malham-Moor, Otterburn, and Scosthorpe, in the western division, of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE and EWCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, and containing 1005 inhabitants, of which number, 204 are in the township of Kirkby in Malham- Dale, 5 miles (E. S. E.) from Settle. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £6. 13, 4., endowed with £200 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire. A free grammar school was founded here, in 1606, by John Topham, who endowed it with certain lands which, with subsequent bequests, produce an income of £21 a year, for which, and moderate quarterages, from twenty to thirty children receive an English education; but the classics are taught free to those who apply.

Knowles - Malham Wills: Several transcribed wills which mention both people and property around the village. One refers to a Maypole which once stood on the green.

Ancient Petitions : The National Archives have free pdf downloads of some local documents. These are in Norman French and date from the early 15th cent, but the NA have provided fairly detailed detailed abstracts of their content, which includes the names of the people and places mentioned in the documents.
